Personal initiative is the most potent of personal characteristics. It is the one that is worth the most to you and your family. The lack of personal initiative is the one flaw in your character that, if not corrected, will cost you the most. Did you know that, in essence, there are four levels of personal initiative?

Level one

The man who will do the right thing before he-she is asked and before it needs to be done

Level two

The man who does the right thing, but only if asked.

Level three

The man who will do the right thing, but only if he-she has been asked some times.

Level four

The man who refuses to do the right thing, no matter how many times he is asked, nor how bad the situation has become.

Let us look at each in tern:

Level one personality

The man who will do the right thing before he is asked and before it needs to be done. This type sees an opportunity to take action. The task does not Have To Be Done: nobody is asking for it. If it is not done no immediate catastrophe will ensue (today). But taking performance today sets up a train of cause and ensue that will pay huge divides later in the year.

This performance is

- Creative

- Preemptive

- Imaginative

- Valuable

Actions that are self initiated, goal directed and intelligently executed will inevitably pay you back many- fold.

People who are level one personality tend to be richer, happier and more successful. If you check the records, you will see for yourself.

- President Obama

- Arnold Schwarzenegger

They are level one personalities. Join the gang. Be a level one personality too.

Level two personalities

The man who does the right thing, but only if asked or only if it has become a emergency Level two people work for level one personalities. Level two personalities don't make much money and they are often stressed out. These people make good employees but not good leaders. Why? Because they need to be told what to do. This type has good potential for leadership because they can convert and initiate their personal initiative at will. Today.

Level three personalities

The man who will do the right thing but only if he has been asked some times or it is late and he is being chased. Level three personalities at last get into deep trouble. These people make poor employees. They have to be constantly checked and duplicate checked. It is a waste of time and effort. These people should strive to become a level two character type.

Level four personalities

The man who refuses to do the right thing, no matter how many times he is asked, nor how bad the situation has become. Level four personalities end up sick and depressed and at the lowest of the ladder. They probably do not work for your club because they are almost unemployable. These people need help.

The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a widely-used technique developed by project managers to enable close analysis of the factors affecting the project schedule. Through Critical Path Analysis (CPA), project managers are able to make more accurate schedules and estimations.

The popular project management software, MS Project, includes various tools to facilitate creating and managing a CP. This article considers how MS Project can make developing and using a CP a simple, step-by-step procedure.

Creating a CP using Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project allows users to create and manage a CP using the Gantt Chart capability. A Gantt Chart represents the tasks necessary to complete a project. The MS Project Gantt Chart represents task dependencies (when one task cannot be started until another is complete), task duration (including 'slack' - the number of days a task can run over schedule) and also summary tasks (groups of subtasks). The MS Project Gantt Chart view is automatically displayed at the start of any project.

The Critical Path describes the shortest possible sequence of tasks that are essential to successful project closure. The tasks on a project's Critical Path will be interdependent: that is, one task is a pre-requisite for carrying the next. When the last task on the Critical Path is complete, the project can close. Any task that is not necessary for carrying out another task, or for project closure, is not part of the CP.

MS Project 'critical tasks'

A critical task is a task which has no 'slack'. This was earlier defined as the number of days that a task can run over schedule. In the context of the Critical Path, it means more specifically "the amount of time that a task can slip before it affects another task or the project's finish date." The MS Project CP is therefore made up of tasks locked end-to-end in task dependency.

Display your CP with MS Project

The quickest way to view your project's CP is to open the View menu, click on More Views, select Detail Gantt, and then click Apply. This displays all the tasks necessary to complete a project. Critical tasks are displayed as red bars along a horizontal axis measured in project time. The 'filter' function can then be used to display critical (or, if required, non-critical) tasks only.

Shorten the CP with Microsoft Project

Sometimes the project manager needs to bring forward the finish-date of the project. This can be achieved using MS Project through the following activities:

o Shorten the duration of individual tasks

o schedule overtime

o break a task down into smaller components that can be worked on simultaneously

o assign additional resources to a task

o Create a more flexible schedule

o revise or remove task dependencies

o change task constraints

More than one CP

Most complex projects will have more than one sequence of essential, interdependent project tasks. The MS Project Critical Path will be the main Critical Path for the project, but you can display multiple chains of tasks within a project and even within a program. It is also possible, using MS Project, to create a portfolio or program Critical Path, enabling the project manager to evaluate each task against the overall business strategy.
